It sometimes takes a team. We have a number of freelance proofers on books and now have someone slowly working back over the short fiction as well, helping us fix everything I tended to miss early on. And by we, I don’t just mean me and Kris, but everyone working at WMG Publishing. If you haven’t noticed the web site yet, WMGPublishing.com, we have a new full-time publisher. And wait until you see the next two Fey covers from the wonderful artist we hired to do those. And just today we had someone in the office to help with computer linking between the offices. And so on and so on. A team.

I read that very differently – that it takes a team of for-hire (or volunteer) professionals to create the product. Many self-published writers are using that exact model.

Personally, I hire a fabulous graphic designer for my novel covers (full POD design), and a copyeditor. I also make use of ‘free’ talent – I have a PhD friend who is a grammar goddess, a fabulous critique partner, and an in-house editor who makes me work hard. :)

Kris said: “Think of it like this: a movie studio hires a director, cinematographers, actors, extras, costume designers, etc. to work on a movie. When that movie is over, the professionals from the actors to the directors can work on a different movie for a different studio. That’s how Shirky envisions the creation of a book working.”

Let’s hope the comparison ends there. The movie business is an incredibly poor business model for content creators, PARTICULARLY writers.
