Folks, if you haven’t already, go read my wife’s blog this morning. We didn’t intend to have what we were writing about sort of fit together, but they do. Worth your read and time.

Bestselling author Dean Wesley Smith has written more than one hundred popular novels and well over two hundred published short stories. His novels include the science fiction novel Laying the Music to Rest and the thriller The Hunted as D.W. Smith. With Kristine Kathryn Rusch, he is the coauthor of The Tenth Planet trilogy and The 10th Kingdom. He writes under many pen names and has also ghosted for a number of top bestselling writers.
Dean has also written books and comics for all three major comic book companies, Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse, and has done scripts for Hollywood. One movie was actually made.
Over his career he has also been an editor and publisher, first at Pulphouse Publishing, then for VB Tech Journal, then for Pocket Books. He is now an executive editor for Fiction River.

Boy, you two have an awful lot in common. You should ask her out.
[Tried to leave this comment on Kris's website, but for some reason it didn't take (i.e., "awaiting moderation"), so I'll try again here.]
Kris said: “Think of it like this: a movie studio hires a director, cinematographers, actors, extras, costume designers, etc. to work on a movie. When that movie is over, the professionals from the actors to the directors can work on a different movie for a different studio. That’s how Shirky envisions the creation of a book working.”
Let’s hope the comparison ends there. The movie business is an incredibly poor business model for content creators, PARTICULARLY writers.
Think “Sunset Boulevard”…

Hi Todd,
I read that very differently – that it takes a team of for-hire (or volunteer) professionals to create the product. Many self-published writers are using that exact model.
Personally, I hire a fabulous graphic designer for my novel covers (full POD design), and a copyeditor. I also make use of ‘free’ talent – I have a PhD friend who is a grammar goddess, a fabulous critique partner, and an in-house editor who makes me work hard.
Anthea, that’s what Kris meant. It sometimes takes a team. We have a number of freelance proofers on books and now have someone slowly working back over the short fiction as well, helping us fix everything I tended to miss early on. And by we, I don’t just mean me and Kris, but everyone working at WMG Publishing. If you haven’t noticed the web site yet, WMGPublishing.com, we have a new full-time publisher. And wait until you see the next two Fey covers from the wonderful artist we hired to do those. And just today we had someone in the office to help with computer linking between the offices. And so on and so on. A team.
