Two Online Design Workshops Starting in January.
We are calling this our Design Series. At the moment it will only be offered in January and March sessions. (See schedule below.) I doubt we will do these through the summer and we’ll see about next fall.
COVER DESIGN WORKSHOP
Everything you need to know about book cover design, from basic layout to fonts, and which fonts work together. This will include how to design covers for both electronic and print books, including spines and back covers. Also you will learn how to find and work with professional art, including how to find professional art at a reasonable price. If you are afraid you can’t design your own covers, this will change that fear in six easy and fun weeks and make your books look professional.
INTERIOR BOOK DESIGN WORKSHOP
Everything you need to know about designing an interior of a book from basic front page layout to fonts and which fonts work together and which fonts are good for reading. You will learn margins, leading, running headers, masters for page counts, and so much more. This class is for the interior of print books. If you want to hold your own book in your hands and have it look as professional as any book coming from traditional publishing, this is the workshop for you.
Both workshops will be taught by professional book designer Allyson Longueira. If you want your book interiors and book covers to look professional instead of indie, Allyson can help you.
The courses will be six weeks (as are the other online workshops) and will allow you to turn in assignments during those six weeks if you want personal feedback from Allyson. Also, if you want to turn in assignments for us to help you with, both workshops will require that during that time you work in InDesign. (You can get signed up for InDesign for a small fee per month and drop off the subscription when the class is done. But you can take the class without InDesign if you want and we’ll try our best to help you.)
We are offering two classes per time period per topic. Six weeks long. Cost $300.00 Maximum of 12 per class. First come, first in.

Where are you finding images that are available for less than $20? The cheapest I’ve found, for ones I really like, are about $60. This price is for the extended license, so I can use them in both digital and print formats and unlimited use. Anything cheaper than that and I find it limits the amount of use or doesn’t include print.
Erica, there are a number of great sites that allow “royalty free” license use of very professional art and photos from professional artists. It’s a new way for artists to make nice money on their work. iStockPhoto is one and Dreamstime is another. There are a number of others. You spend some time searching for the right piece, and remember, you are licensing it for non-exclusive use, which means other can use it as well. The amount of license costs depends on the size of the file and the level of the artist. If you are doing book covers, make sure the license from any site allows book covers. We make sure to also print off the page with the image and the license and put it in the files with the story.
Dean, I use these guys http://123rf.com They recommended using the extended licence for print and ebook covers, which works out to be about $60 depending on the size of the image, and I go for stupidly large, since Amazon and iBookstore put their cover size requirements up a couple months ago.
Just looked over the licence for istockphoto http://www.istockphoto.com/help/licenses
How do you get around the restriction on ‘online print-on-demand’ products? Or do they mean reproducing just the image, not the image as part of the product? I’m not a legal expert, this part usually puts me off, though.
They do have a higher impression rate for the standard licence than the place I’ve been using. So I might look into these guys more.
Thanks
Erica, that restriction is only for the image itself. It is clear you can use it for books, both electronic and print.
