Running, Workshops, and Writing

And Pretty Much in That Order…

Got out of the house late and then had to run errands. Two banks and both of our stores.

Then I spent an hour, with Kris’s help, getting myself so I could get some music over my bluetooth headphones from my phone.

Then I headed to do my short run, which trust me, did not feel short or quick, even though it was only three-quarters of a mile. I made it, but it was not a pretty sight.

Problem is I don’t have a pace or breathing down yet, so my pace was just under a 9 minute pace, way too fast to be starting off. (I didn’t know that I was going that fast until I was finished.) I need to maintain about a ten minute mile to be safe in the Marathon next fall. I could average an 11 minute pace, but that’s cutting it far too close to the 5 hour cut-off. So aiming at 10 minute mile pace. Going to take some training to hit that and be comfortable again.

Then I went to work on workshops, then home for a nap, dinner and The Voice, and more workshop stuff. Finally got to my writing late, but still managed 1,400 words in one session.

Tomorrow is more workshops and I try to hit one mile running before taking a break on Wednesday. I am still too heavy and way out of shape, so that’s going to be interesting, and not in a good way. (grin)

Try breathing through your nose. Deep breaths through your nose when you’re feeling winded. And I’d go slower, closer to that 11-minute pace or slower at first and then slowly build up. Later on you can do shorter sprints to increase speed after you have experience and your body is ready for it. By the way, I do have 30 years of running experience including 5 marathons. Still running long distance and I’m your age. Good luck!

Rober, great to hear that. Thanks. Yeah, I used to be a runner and have run a marathon. So I have the basics. This is just me trying to get this started while still too heavy to really do it. But eating better and the weight should start slowly coming off as I keep the distance walking up as well as add in the running.

But it is amazing how stuff that came second nature to me years ago now that I am restarting feel all wrong and don’t work the same. (grin)

Since you’ve already run one that’s half the battle, the mental aspect getting over those last six or seven miles when your body has given up and your mind/spirit have to keep you going.

        • dwsmith

Yeah, I remember well. (grin) And the one I want to try to run is on the Strip in Las Vegas in November. A strictly-timed five hour limit. I’d like to be in good enough shape to do it in four. But that time limit worries me a lot. Luckily I walk fast. (grin)

          • robert bucchianeri

Yeah. Four is tough for me now. The last marathon I did a couple years ago I was at 4:20. I think running sprints at short distances is the key to a faster time. But they can be painful. Hopefully, it won’t be too hot in Vegas–I guess November should be okay. The run/walk admixture seems to work well for a lot of people doing marathons.

          • dwsmith

No doubt at all I will be doing the run/walk. I’m a believer. Just staying away from the five hour time limit is the battle. (grin)
