Too Much Other Stuff

Yup, We All Have Them…

Meetings and then I spent a couple of hours up at WMG working on collectable stuff. We (meaning me and Josh, the North store manager among other jobs) are madly working to dig out a massive collection I bought about four years ago and haven’t done anything with.

But at the WMG stores and offices and warehouses, to dig out one thing, it takes moving around a ton of other stuff. But almost there.

The collection? Well, for libraries, they used to bind newspapers to make them easier to store and handle. The Oregonian, the main Portland paper, was bound in large black books, each paper laid flat. The entire issue of every day was in there. Ads, comics, front pages, and all. Even all the Sunday sections. Each book was usually a month of newspapers and they are huge and very, very heavy.

The books were never opened, just stored for all those years flat and in a dark and dry place. Even 100 year-old newspaper is still white and supple. Stunning for collectors of ads and comics and history.

I bought a collection of over 800 of the monster black books that stretches from 1906 to 1990. If in a normal bedroom the books were stacked six feet tall (about as high as I can lift one), you would not be able to get in the door. As I said, a massive collection.

So we are trying to dig them out of where we stored them years ago so we can start cutting off the spines and taking all the pieces out of them and get them sold. Comics, ads, front pages, all have amazing value, especially in mint condition as these are.

So today I moved a massive glass collection of collectable glass (40 boxes or so) to get to the black books and started moving boxes of comics, but didn’t make it very far into that collection. About 50,000 comics stand in the way at the moment. None of this is in either store, just warehoused.

Yes, I am that crazy. And all this is only a tiny part of what is in those warehouse areas.

So after that, I cooked dinner, did e-mail, took a nap, and then spent far too long this evening watching season-enders of shows. Lots of drama.

Then instead of doing other things like writing or workshop stuff here in my office, I got playing around on planning my assault on the running. The running part ramps up tomorrow. I have spent the last five days changing my diet to far healthier and fewer calories.

For the running, Kris got me headphones and I got some podcasts and music on my phone to listen to. So tomorrow I do a little running and plan to get six miles total for the day. (Over 12,000 steps.)

So by the time I realized I had watched too much television and worked too long on the running stuff, I didn’t get any writing done or any workshop stuff done.  Ahh well.

One of those days.

If you run across the Ark of the Covenant back there, I want first dibs.
