It Started with Algis Budry’s ROGUE MOON…
Two nights ago I mentioned that I had been lucky enough to first edit a volume of Fiction River called Fiction River: Moonscapes and now I am curating a bundle of science great fiction novels based around that Fiction River volume.
Not only for the incredible science fiction novels in this bundle and the benefit it will do for AbleGamers, I find this Moonscapes bundle special because of my past. And I’m not just talking about last year. I am talking about 1960. That’s right, fifty-seven years ago I read Rogue Moon for the first time. The book stuck with me.
(And for a couple of decades I got to call Algis Budrys (AJ) a friend. I even started Tomorrow Magazine and hired him as the editor, then sold him the magazine with the second issue. He also bought my second professional-level story for the very first volume of Writers of the Future.)
Now, I have not reread Rogue Moon in decades, so I do not know if it stands up, but a good friend just read it recently and said it does. And is as masterful as ever.
The novel is short, like one of mine, like many of the time. And what I remember most is the tag on the cover of the original Gold Medal edition.
“He suffered and was killed. And the next day was reborn and ascended to the moon — and was seated on the right hand of death.”
Now to a young kid first finding science fiction and working on grinding and polishing a mirror for his own telescope, that book was stunning. I am convinced I didn’t understand a bunch of the deeper meaning back then, but it sure had cool alien stuff and a transporter, way before Star Trek.
Ever since, moons always indicate to me top quality science fiction. And being able to do Fiction River: Moonscapes and now this nifty Moonscapes bundle is a wonderful flash into my past in science fiction. That is one reason this bundle is so special to me.
And honestly, this bundle would be a great present to a young kid, boy or girl. You never know which book will get them reading and imagining as Rogue Moon did for me. It very well could be one in this bundle.
The initial titles in the Moonscapes Bundle (minimum $5 to purchase) are:
- Starflight by Ron Collins
- The Nara Reaction by M. L. Buchman
- Recovery Man by Kristine Kathryn Rusch
- Auberon by Blaze Ward
- In Dreams by Annie Reed
If you pay more than the bonus price of just $15, you get all five of the regular titles, plus five more!
- Eternity by Maggie Jaimeson
- Rediscovery by Lisa Silverthorne
- Climbing Olympus by Kevin J. Anderson
- Fiction River: Moonscapes by Fiction River
- Star Mist by Dean Wesley Smith
This bundle is available only for a limited time via http://www.storybundle.com. It allows easy reading on computers, smartphones, and tablets as well as Kindle and other ereaders via file transfer, email, and other methods. You get multiple DRM-free formats (.epub and .mobi) for all books!
It’s also super easy to give the gift of reading with StoryBundle, thanks to their gift cards – which allow you to send someone a code that they can redeem for any future StoryBundle bundle – and timed delivery, which allows you to control exactly when your recipient will get the gift of StoryBundle.
Trust me, folks, this is some fantastic summer reading. And for $15 and a few bucks to AbleGamers, you can’t go wrong here.
Writing for the Night
Managed to get to my writing computer at 2:30 a.m., about a half hour later than I hope to this month. Did two sessions with a short break in the middle and ended up with 2,600 words on the novel. Should have it done in a day or so. Finally.
Then I can put two issues of Smith’s Monthly together, then finish a third novel that is almost done and put a third issue together. I hope to do all that in the next week and get to writing a new book.
