Writing in Public: Summary of Month 12

Month #12 Summary of this Writing in Public challenge.

July 2014

I will do a year-end summary after this. So check that out. This post is only about July.

Once again, as with last month, this was a pretty solid month, all things considered.

Smith’s Monthly is going right along. #10 is done and will be shipping to subscribers as soon as the fine folks at WMG Publishing get back next week. And #11 will be back from the proofreader this week as well and will be out by the end of August.

I finished two novels this month, including Avalanche Creek, the 12th novel of the year. So that felt great.

As I said last month, the online workshops might seem like they take a lot of my time, but they honestly don’t because they just don’t fill up with writers most of the time. Especially this time of the year. See my post on the “Time of Great Forgetting.”  Many of the workshops will only have three or four writers in them in August, so I can really help those people. And that’s fun for me. (Still time to jump into the August workshops.)

Also, back in June I moved the workshop schedule to only three days per week, which has helped me a great deal.

As before, on this report and during the month, I only reported new words on everything.

I also got 8 new covers done. Those were fun.

My responses to questions on my blogs and to questions in the workshop web sites I still don’t count. I did a rough count of them in July and decided to just skip them. It would add about seven to ten thousand words per month in the total writing, since I answer comments on four web sites. (Here, the workshop site, the lecture site, and Smith’s Monthly site.) I don’t mind answering comments, so I decided I’m NOT going to count those at all.

I had a total new words written of 105,650 words, almost identical to June.  60,750 words of that was new fiction, more than June.

In twelve months I have written a total of 1,281,675 original words, or an average of 106,800 words per month. Considering those bad winter months, that’s not bad.

Just under 1.3 million words.

Coming New Month

Just as I did with the twelve months before, I’m going to start the counting over for August. And I’ll start the project list of completed projects for the month over as well. Up under the Writing in Public tab at the top I will put the completed projects per month and links to the first and last posts of the month and to this summary post, so anyone can go back and look.

I am also going to add in a few new features that will start over the next week or so. One is a comparison of last year’s writing output for the same time period. Plus other stuff. Stay tuned as this moves on to Year Two.

I also want to thank everyone for the great comments and questions over this last year. Please don’t be afraid to comment if something strikes you. I enjoy them.

Stay tuned.  Here we go with Year Two starting shortly.
